Tips to Beat the Heat

(Houston, TX) – The Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HCOHSEM) reminds residents to take precautions as high temperatures affect our region.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, leaving children or pets unattended inside a hot vehicle is dangerous and can be fatal. Even when a car is in the shade, the temperature inside can rise more than 20 degrees in only 10 minutes.

Extreme heat and high humidity prevent the body from cooling itself, which may lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. HCOHSEM offers these safety tips to beat the heat this summer:

  • Hydrate throughout the day. Do not wait until you feel thirsty to drink water.
  • Avoid alcohol and beverages with high caffeine or sugar content.
  • Check on your family, friends, and neighbors. People who are elderly, sick, young or without air conditioning will have a more difficult time during periods of high heat.
  • Provide shade and water for your pets.
  • Monitor local weather updates.
  • Limit sun exposure and stay indoors as much as possible. Avoid difficult outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.
  • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and a hat while outdoors.
  • ALWAYS use sunscreen. Sunburns may affect your body's ability to cool down.

Lastly, severe heat for long periods may strain the electric grid. To reduce strain and avoid potential power outages, set your air conditioner to 78°F or higher and avoid using large appliances between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

  • SIEMPRE use protector solar.
