Harris County Judge Hidalgo and OHSEM Monitoring More Potential Severe Weather Coming Overnight

Harris County, TX, May 1, 2024 – Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, the Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HCOHSEM) and the Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) are preparing to monitor more incoming severe weather this evening and into tomorrow. HCOHSEM is currently activated at Level 3 – Increased Readiness in response to flooding along the San Jacinto River and additional rainfall.

The primary threat will be additional flooding triggered by heavy rainfall expected in Southeast Texas beginning tonight. This developing threat will be monitored overnight by internal staff and HCFCD. The rain may affect the same San Jacinto river areas that saw impacts this morning, or it could impact other parts of Northern Harris County.

“We think the worst might be over at this point, but of course we can never be sure. We are ready, we are prepared and the Office of Emergency Management is activated just in case as we continue to monitor heavy rainfall near the northern part of the county tonight. At this point I am feeling grateful that no one has been injured and that all of the systems we have in place are working as they should. We’re here to protect the community and I’m grateful for all of our partners who are helping us keep Harris County safe as we continue to monitor the ongoing severe weather,” said Judge Lina Hidalgo.

First responders remain on standby to assist residents who need to be evacuated. So far, crews have rescued 8 people and 30 animals from areas near the East Fork of the San Jacinto River. Residents who are stranded and need transportation to a safe location should not attempt to drive through high water, and instead should call 9-1-1.

Folks who need a place to stay can go to one of the following shelters:

  • Philippian's New Faith Missionary Baptist Church: 7858 Angus St. Houston, TX 77028 (accepts pets)
  • Calvary Baptist Church in Cleveland: 816 N Blair Ave, Cleveland, TX 77327 (accepts pets)

Residents can monitor rainfall and bayou water levels through the Harris County Regional Flood Warning System website at www.harriscountyfws.org.
