Red Flag Warning Issued for Aug. 21 in Harris County
The Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HCOHSEM) has issued the following warning for those who live, work, or are visiting in Harris County:
The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for Aug. 21 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The hot, dry, and windy conditions occurring today increase the risk of fire danger. HCOHSEM is currently at Level II – High Readiness in response to the drought and fire threat in the county.
Currently, the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) in Harris County is 748. The KBDI is used to determine fire potential. The drought index ranges from 0 to 800, where a drought index of 0 represents no moisture depletion, and an index of 800 represents absolutely dry conditions.
Harris County residents are urged to be extremely careful with any source of ignition including outdoor open flame and propane, as any fire can grow and spread quickly. Activities that could cause a spark such as yard work and campfires should be avoided. Dispose of cigarettes and other smoking materials in appropriate containers and NEVER throw them out of car windows.
It never hurts to be prepared. Ensure your vehicle has a full tank, your emergency kit is ready and within reach, and your family members and pets are prepared to evacuate if fires threaten your location. For more information on how to stay safe during fires, visit Ready.gov.
Tropical Storm Gert has formed overnight in the Atlantic. At this time, Gert is expected to dissipate quickly with no impacts to Texas. Now is a good time to check your emergency kits and review your emergency plans.
